Much like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in the wrist, this condition can lead to entrapment of the Tibial Nerve behind the Ankle.

Long Flexor Tendinopathy

Other tendons besides the Posterior Tibial Tendon run behind the Ankle. These can become inflamed, overloaded or degenerative following trauma or overuse injury.

Ankle Arthritis

Ankle Arthritis (usually formed following trauma) can affect the Inner Ankle. This can cause stiffness and swelling and is usually exacerbated with walking/sports activities.

Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome

Although MTSS affects the shin, it is usually felt in the lower third of the shin bone. This can be felt low down the Tibia, towards the Inner Ankle.

Training Error

‘Too much too soon after doing too little for too long’

Most Ankle Pain is often a result of an increase in load. This can stem from training error, weight gain and many other factors. Inappropriate footwear for sport or other activities is often a cause for Inner Ankle Pain.

Body Mass Index

Flat or High Arched Feet

In some cases excess rotation associated with Flat Feet can place stress on the inside of the Ankle. This can cause compressions on nerves – as well as tractions on soft tissue insertions. Mechanical issues which may be associated with Flat or High Arched Feet can often lead to the development of Inside Ankle Pain.
