Sesamoiditis

Sesamoiditis is a common pain syndrome that affects the forefoot. It is especially common in distance runners, football players and dancers.

In the foot, the Sesamoids are two small, pea shaped bones located under the long metatarsal bone at the ball of the foot. Sesamoid injuries can involve the bones themselves, the tendon and / or surrounding tissues of the big toe joint.

What causes Sesamoiditis?

Like most injuries, there can be variety of causes:

  • Trauma / Repetitive Micro-trauma
  • Improperly fitted or padded shoes
  • Biomechanical stress
  • Occupational standing
