Plantar Plate Injuries involve damage to the  ligaments that lie beneath the toe joints. They are most commonly found at the base of the 2nd toe joint.

What causes Plantar Plate injury?

Like other injuries in the foot and ankle, there is a variety of possible causes for Plantar Plate injury. Most of these causes are related to excess pressure on the forefoot:

  • Biomechanical issues
  • Bunions (Hallux-Abducto-Valgus)
  • Hammer Toes
  • Footwear with inappropriate heel height (high heels) • Jumping sports and forefoot striking when running
  • Irregular metatarsal length
