Fat Pad Atrophy

The Fat Pad on the bottom of the Heel and Forefoot (ball of the foot) should be plump and supple, allowing for effective shock absorption. Sometimes with age, overuse or trauma, the fat pads on our feet can become thinner, giving the underlying tissues and bone less protection. We think of this a little bit like running a car on low tyre pressures. When the fat pad on our feet atrophies (becomes thinner and less protective) we can develop pain, aching and soreness underfoot with walking and weight-bearing.

We see these problems frequently at Northernhay Clinic and can give you useful advice on Footwear & Custom Foot Orthoses in order to help make each step a little more comfortable.
