Chronic Exertional Compartment Syndromes (CECS)

At Northernhay Clinic we are experts in the diagnosis and management of Chronic Exertional Shin & Calf pain. Our consultant MSK Podiatrist Jonathan Palmer BSc (Pod) FFPM RCPS (Glasg). FCPM has extensive experience in the assessment, diagnsosis and treatment of shin pain following 20 years of Podiatry services to HM Royal Marines Commando Training Centre, Lympstone.

CECS is brought on during exercise, with symptoms often occurring at the same time, distance, or intensity of activity. It can involve all compartments of the lower leg.

During exercise, the muscles demand for oxygen and nutrients increases, causing them to swell in size as they are perfused with blood. Consequently, as these muscles expand, they become constricted by the fascia (a band of connective tissue) that surrounds them. The increased size of the muscle within the given leg compartment causes compression of the nerves and blood vessels that supply the leg and ankle.

If you are experiencing aching, numbness, cramping or unusual symptoms in your calf or shin, especially when running – contact our Team today.
