Nail Surgery

Nail surgery is a minor surgical procedure and can be carried out at Northernhay Clinic under local analgesia.

Many patients have nail shapes that pre-dispose to in-growing toe nails (onychocryptosis) or other problems such as painful corns under the nail (onychophosis). Thickened toe nails can also cause problems (onychogryphosis) and sometimes these nails are best removed for good!

Nail surgery includes

Total nail avulsion (removal of the whole nail plate)
Partial nail avulsion (removal of the offending section of the nail)
Chemical cautery of the nail matrix (tissue which creates the nail) is usually performed with phenol. This can stop re-growth of the nail or part of the nail removed. As with any surgical procedure, there is always a risk of failure (nail re-growth).

Healing times vary (generally between 4 and 8 weeks) - and patients must be aware that the resulting wound requires home redressing as well as periodic checks here at the clinic.

Normal footwear can usually be resumed 2 days after surgery
